Making a Mess

So it's been a while. I blame the good weather. It hasn't really been a time to stay indoors making things. But this weekend was different. I spent the day in Ray's workshop getting covered in paint, trying to emulate the great Kurt Jackson by painting, sticking, bonding, gluing, ironing, anything that involved a great deal of mess. I think we ended up just making mess, but oh how we laughed doing it. Maybe Ray will post her results on her blog. Here are mine. I would like to add, many of these fine works would have looked far better if I had stopped at certain time, but we like to think it's all about experimenting after having been out of practice for a while.

Sock Monkey

So Jackie from Canada kindly informs me that my sock monkeys are famous after having been quoted in a Canadian Newspaper which menioned I have a sock monkey tutorial. This is true. I have a link to a PDF you can download on the left hand side. Of course the minute I started to bask in the warm glow of fame, the internet broke and the link to the PDF went funny. I'm sorry to all you frustrated Canadians who can't download it. Hopefully I will have fixed it by the time you read this and all will be well. As compensation for this shoddy internet breakdown I will endeavour to put up a photo story showing the stages. Thanks for giving me the heads up Jackie, more sock monkeys in the world can only be a good thing.

Another Cosy

It's time for another tea cosy me thinks. I am getting much quicker at them now I am on number three. I have started being able to recognise what stitch I have just done and unpick stitiches without twisting them. The wool was my best bargain. Electric pink and purple both found in a £1 bargain bucket outside a wool shop. What a winner. I have stopped now as I can't decide what colour to make the cherry on the top. Maybe white or plum? I really am not sure. Maybe I need to sleep on it. I think soon I might move onto a new knitting pattern now I feel I have suitably mastered this one.

Bag One

So here is my first bag. I did lots of things wrong, it was quite complicated, but it's made. Bag number two is in the making.

Bag Making

I went to Liberty's and saw that they sell Amy Butler fabric which I found so exciting I proceeded to try and buy the whole shop up. I signed up to the loyalty card, and found out the material sale starts next week with 20% off everything.

I think this is the beginning of an expensive love affair. I started making this bag, but it could take some time. It's a bit more complicated than I thought. I am also eagerly waiting for my Sublime stitching pattern to arrive so I can embroider my bags. In the meantime I have been practicing with the help of my mum's really old embroidery books which are right out of the 70's. Some of the designs are probably right back at the height of fashion.

Three of Kind

Meet the gang. Persius is the leader. Snitch and Hortense spend most of their time following Persius around sniggering. Together they like to sit on the roof terrace smoking cigars and patrolling the grounds for slugs. There on-going mission is to rid the world of the slug scourge. In fact they meet in Marble Arch every tuesday to pamphlet their cause.

I Can't Stop

Two new additions. Verybigjen has some great floral ones so I made one exactly the same as I liked them so much. The sincerest form of flattery I like think. I really must stop making these. I am an addict. They are just so quick. 20 minutes tops. Great.

The Rabbits Have Mated

Something suspicious happened overnight. I am busy naming them. I might then have to separate them. Frisky little blighters.

Meet The First of Many

Poliphilus Hemskerck has problems; issues; life concerns. He always has them. He wears them like a warm rat on his shoulder casually sniffing his ears. He is sure the excess worry will be his downfall just as sure as he is sure of his ineluctable downfall. With so little control over the inevitable Poliphilus Hemskerck spends a great deal of his time shrugging his shoulders and imagining doom. He also likes to take amateur french classes and dance the tango like he is full of amour and vigour.

Poliphilus worries about his ears. They are rather pointy. A problem with angles so his creator tells him.

Badges

So I've been having more fun with the badge maker. Now I plan to make the owners of these fine badges. You must ask yourself. Who would wear this kind of badge? Creature number 1 is in production.

For some reason I just keep making more. I am going to stop now, but I might have to make some fancier ones like Very Big Jen's which are just ace! Here are some of her tutorials.

Day Glow

A trip down Berwick street and I couldn't resist this cheap material. There is so much stuff to choose from. This little lot cost me a fiver. I am addicted to spots.

Quilt-o-rama

So a new quilt is called for. Sibling number 1 is having a baby so I have dug out a pattern I have been saving for some time. I had considered dropping this 'Little House on the Prairie' attitude I seem to have with quilts, but I just couldn't stop myself. The quilt I am going to try to make was hung up on a stall at a big show. My mother and I did our best to transcribe it, but I have a sneaking suspicion that my version will be riddled with flaws. Anyway the material is bought, washed and dried and ready to go.

Badge Badger

After playing with my friends industrial badgemaker I was hooked. The end of the month made me impetuous and before I knew it, my very own machine was winging its way from Germany. Do I need one? Not really. Do I want one? Yes siree I do. Now every creature will have it's very own badge and I might even do some sets for the stall. I feel the urge to make a sock monster in celebration. I have some very sparkly socks from Top Shop which will do just the job.

Tidy Compulsions

So it rained all weekend. Ace. There are so many things to do when you're housebound. I decided to pop down the pound shop and buy some boxes so I could once and for all sort out all my material which has been up until now, shoved in a cupboard from which it spills out everytime I open the door. So voila! A day of rain later and I am organised.

Square Monsters

I made some new monsters for the stall! Here they are in four flavours. Each one was made slightly differently as I tried to work out the best technique. The stripey arms and some of the buttons came from two tops I got from Tescos bargain bin for £4. You get much more for your money than when you buy socks, so i am on the prowl now for cheap stripes. The T-shirt meaterial works brilliantly because it stretches well. I might have to get me some more of this stuff. I'd really like to start knitting some monsters but my knitting is so poor, I need to practice. Psychotic fiction makes beautiful, animated monsters which inspired these ones I made. Have a look at them here here. I also printed some letterpress labels for them whilst I was away and just ordered some small brown paper bags to wrap them in. It's all very exciting here in stall production land.

Ring Making

Me and Ray embarked on another day school at White House Arts. This time we made rings. After having tried our hand at bracelets, we knew the score and decided not to overly concern ourselves with designs which required a great deal of finish. I mean who wants to spend half the day polishing. I managed to boil my silver early on ensuring that I'd have no smooth shiny finished item, but I quite like the rough effect it gave the ring. Apparently it's a sought after technique with a cool sounding name so the teacher tried to placate me with. Can you see it on the surface? The other ring has a pattern created by putting through a flattening machine with a feather. It was a great day, but both my rings are slightly too small and start to cut off my blood supply as the day progresses. But what are a few blue fingers in the name of creativity eh? Anyway Ray asked for the size information on the fact sheet so here it is. (I will bing it home with me next time, but just in case you feel the need to make me a ring in the meantime…)

Going Public

Me and Kate are thinking of doing a stall at the Brick Lane little Christmas fete thingy which happens every year. we went this year just gone and came away with heaps of stuff. Keyrings, purses, badges, all manner of useless things people had made. I loved everything.

For £50 you get a table alongside lots of illustrators, fanzine and fashion type folk who sell their small things for one weekend during the run up to Christmas. Me and Kate have been wracking our brains what to make. So to get the ball rolling I have made price tags... Now I just need to make some things for a fiver. I think Five pounds might be our theme. Everything could be five pounds! Oh I do love thinking about it. Lukily there is plenty of time and we don't need to make much as we are splitting the stall 4 ways. That's probably 30 square centimeters each.

So the question remains: What can I make quickly and sell for five pounds that the trendy young londoners will like?
So far all I seem to be making is pin cushions.
